Ten typical errors that can destroy your plants

plants growth

When it comes to caring for their plants, parents may go above and beyond. It can be detrimental to plants to overcare them. Excessive fertilization, watering, and pruning can kill a plant despite efforts to extend its lifespan. It is important for planters to understand the common over-care errors that can harm plants. Plant enthusiasts can adopt a more balanced approach to care, encouraging healthy growth and longevity, by identifying and changing these habits. They can guaranty the health and well-being of their plants by doing this.

1. Putting the plant in the wrong location: A plant’s growth and health can be significantly impacted by placing it in the incorrect spot. While some plants require direct sunlight, others do well in indirect light or shade. A shade-loving plant may burn its leaves if exposed to intense sunlight, while a sun-loving plant may grow weakly and palely if left in the dark. When deciding where to put the plant, always take into account its needs for light, temperature, humidity, and airflow.

2. Not repotting: Most plants need to be repotted every 1-3 years when their roots get so big that they reach the edge of the container. Try to pick a pot that is only 1-2 sizes bigger. To remove the plant from its pot, use gentle hands and be careful not to damage the roots.

3. Pests and disease: Regularly look for pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Isolate the infected plant, and treat it with insecticidal soap or neem oil. It is also essential to inspect your plants regularly for signs of disease and to act quickly.

4. Not fertilising: Fertilising your plants provides essential nutrients for growth. Use a balanced fertilizer during the growing season (spring and summer), and dilute it to half the recommended strength to avoid burning your plants’ roots.

5. Inadequate air circulation: For plants to grow healthily, there must be enough airflow. Be careful not to obstruct air vents and to leave adequate space between plants. Fans can also be used to increase airflow.

6. Low humidity: Indoor plants need a humid atmosphere, usually between 40 and 60 percent relative humidity. You can use a humidifier or set the pot on a tray with water and pebbles to raise the humidity levels around your plants.

7. Inadequate ventilation: The majority of indoor plants prefer daytime temperatures between 65 and 75°F (18 and 24°C) and nighttime temperatures between 55 and 65°F (13 and 18°C). Plants should not be placed close to drafty windows, fireplaces, or heating or cooling vents.

8. Insufficient light: Plants need light to grow, but too little or too much of it can be harmful. Make sure your plants receive the proper amount of light for their particular needs. While some plants flourish in indirect light, others prefer direct sunlight.

9. Underwatering: However, underwatering your plants can also be harmful. Plants that don’t get enough water may experience stress, which can result in a variety of issues. When the soil feels completely dry to the touch, remember to water your plants.

10. Overwatering: Overwatering is one of the most common mistakes that can kill your plant. When you water your plants too much, the roots can rot, and the plant can become susceptible to disease. Check the soil moisture by sticking your finger into the soil up to the first knuckle. If the soil feels dry, it’s time to water.

11. Poor drainage: Plants can be severely harmed by poor drainage because too much water can stay around their roots. Roots may rot and lose their ability to properly absorb nutrients if they are submerged for an extended period of time. This may result in wilting, yellowing leaves, sluggish growth, and ultimately plant death. To keep the roots healthy and to let extra water out, always use pots with drainage holes and soil that drains properly.
